Bashar Al-Assad: Alus Sanguinaire

Jeremiah 49:22-28 ~

Behold, he shall come up and fly as the eagle, and spread his wings over Bozrah [SW Syria]: and at that day shall the heart of the mighty men of Edom [S. Jordan and NW Saudi Arabia] be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.

Concerning Damascus. Hamath [N. Syria] is confounded, and Arpad: for they have heard evil tidings: they are fainthearted; there is sorrow on the sea; it cannot be quiet.

Damascus is waxed feeble, and turneth herself to flee, and fear hath seized on her: anguish and sorrows have taken her, as a woman in travail.

How is the city of praise not left, the city of my joy!

Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets, and all the men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the LORD of hosts.

And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shall consume the palaces of Benhadad.

Origen of Alexandria
(approx. 185 to 254 AD) ~

When the close of the times draws nigh, a great prophet shall be sent from God to turn men to the knowledge of God, and he shall receive the power of doing wonderful things. Wherever men shall not hear him, he will shut up the heavens, and cause it to withhold its rains; he will turn their water into blood; and torment them with thirst and hunger; and if any one shall endeavor to injure him fire shall come forth out of his mouth, and shall burn that man.

By these prodigies and powers he shall turn many to the worship of God; and when his works shall be accomplished, another king shall arise out of Syria, born from an evil spirit, the overthrower and destroyer of the human race, who shall destroy that which is left by the former evil, together with himself....

But that king will not only disgrace himself, but will also be a prophet of lies; and he will constitute and call himself God; and power will be given him to do signs and wonders, by the sight of which he may entice men to adore him. He will command fire to come down from heaven, and the sun to stand and leave its course, and an image to speak, and these things shall be done at his words--by which miracles many even of the wise shall be enticed by him.

Then he will attempt to destroy the temple of God, and persecute the righteous people; and there will be distress and tribulation, such as there never has been from the beginning of the world. Power will be given him to desolate the whole earth for forty-two months. That will be the time in which righteousness will be cast out, and innocence be hated; in which the wicked shall prey upon the good as enemies; neither law, nor order, nor military discipline be preserved.

Introduction to The Sufyani

Among the signs preceding Imam Mahdi, is the appearance of the Sufyani. The Sufyani will emerge from the depths of Damascus before the appearance of Imam Mahdi (the Muslim messiah).

The term "Sufyani" is a term referring to his descent from the progeny of Abu Sufyaan. The Ahadith regarding the Sufyani specify that he is a tyrant who will spread corruption and mischief on the earth before Imam Mahdi (appears). He will be such a tyrant that he will kill the children and rip out the bellies of women. The Sufyani will murder those from the household of the Prophet and will rule over Syria. When he hears about the Mahdi, he will send an army to seize and kill him. However the earth will swallow this army before it even reaches Imam Mahdi ...

The Sufyani will murder the Saadaat and will rule over Egypt and Shaam (Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon and Syria).

Revolution in Syria: The Sufyani Takes Control of the Government by Force

In revolt, a Sufyani, who descends from Abu Sufyaan, and whose mother is from the tribe of Kalb (Syria and western Iraq), will come with 360 riders until he reaches Damascus. Then he will emerge, overrunning and seizing control of Syria. He will have 3 staffs in his hand, and anyone whom he strikes with them will die. After a month the tribe of Kalb will also follow him.

Conquest in Iraq

The Sufyani will then send an army to Iraq, killing 100,000 in Az-Zawra, and also will receive the support of the Roman forces (probably America). The Sufyani and his forces will go to Kufa and pillage it, killing the descendants of the Prophet and to the point where he kills children and rips open women. In retaliation the tribe of Qays will rise up against him, but they will be defeated, and he will slaughter them in Kurkisa.

The Sufyani's army will go to Kufa; a city in Iraq, and from there he will launch an attack against the people of Khurasan. At the Gate of Istakhr, Shuayb bin Salih and the Hashimite under the black banners, will join forces and engage the army of the Sufyani. The battle will be extremely fierce with a tremendous loss of life and the army of the Sufyani will suffer a temporary defeat. It is at this time that a yearning for the Mahdi's appearance is on the lips of everyone.

Nostradamus, Quatrain 6.33 ~

His last hand through the bloody Alus, cannot by the sea to guarantee: Between two rivers, dreading the military hand, black will be the angry repentance.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad

Nostradamus, Quatrain 6.33 ~

His last hand through the bloody Alus, his protection by sea will not be guaranteed: Between two rivers, dreading the military hand, the black and angry one will make him repent.

This will mark the beginning of massive conflict in the Middle East.

It is growing more probable each day that the opening stage of "World War III in the Middle East" will be the "War of Alus," prophesied by Nostradamus in Quatrain 6.33 ... a conflict foreseen by the Biblical prophets Jeremiah and Isaiah that will reaching terrifying proportions with the nuclear destruction of Damascus and other Syrian cities. A regional war that will become much farther-reaching than Syria and its closest neighbours, Israel, Lebanon, Turkey, and Iraq. Given the truly bloody nature of Assad's crackdown on his people, now openly defying his government in popular demonstrations since March 2011, and his brutal actions moving into Syria's border with Turkey, angering and inciting Ankara, it is more than likely that Alus sanguinaire is indeed Syrian president Bashar al-Assad (AL-ASsad).

Of course, in spite of what is now occurring with Turkey, it is just as possible that Syria will instead provoke a war with Israel or vice versa. Clashes occurred on May 16, 2011, on the Israeli-Syrian border between Israeli soldiers and Syrian "protesters" joining in a Palestinian "day of rage" remembering 1948. This occurred again on June 6 on the anniversary of the Israeli annexation of the Golan Heights during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. Many believe both was a cynical attempt by Assad to distract attention away from his crackdown on the Syrian people protesting his regime. Over the years, Damascus has been stockpiling the deadly VX nerve agent and has armed its many missiles with chemical warheads. Assad has recently warned he would destroy Tel Aviv with his missiles, and aid Hezbollah in raining down thousands of rockets and missiles on northern Israel, if Nato launches an attack on Syria. A "grand" war of all wars in the Middle East would probably then begin as an Arab-Israeli conflict.

And then there's the Kurds of northern Iraq. Iraq's minority Kurds, 30 million strong, many of whom are affiliated with the KDP (Kurdistan Democratic Party), have the full support of Washington. Their ultimate ambition is to transform their enclave into a full-blown independent Kurdistan. Teheran, Ankara, Damascus, and Baghdad too, are all dead set against the emergence of a separate Kurdish state and have been known to set aside their differences to prevent such an outcome. At the moment Turkey has serious differences with Syria, and also has serious differences with Iran, and both Turkey and Iran have serious differences with the Talabani government in Iraq. Meantime Israel represents a close military threat to Syria and a longer-range threat to Iran. But to Turkey, Syria, and Iran the Israelis, along with the United States, could become a threat of a different kind if they ally with the Kurds.

There is an old saying in the Arab world that goes "the enemy of enemy is my friend." But in the convoluted chain of events that are now occurring in the region, this maxim may cease to have meaning in a free-for-all war where allies can become friends one day and adversaries the next depending on which way the wind blows.

Thus, I have never indicated that this "War of Alus" would be an easy conflict to explain.

Irregardless of whether the firing shot is between Syria and Turkey or Syria and Israel, somehow IRAQ in the main, central and southern as well as northern, becomes involved since it is clearly the nation found "between two rivers."

No matter how the "War of Alus" begins, its end will be found not only in Syria itself, but also in Iraq. Thus, the US military in and arround Iraq may well be pulled into the conflict, pinned down as it will be fighting the Iranian-backed southern Iraqi Shi'a, currently under the leadership of Muqtada al-Sadr, on the one hand, and the terrorists led by Iraqi al-Qaeda leader Abu Ayyub al-Masri on the other.

In Quatrain 6.33, Nostradamus describes one of three very troubling scenarios: either 1) the US military in Iraq, 2) a strong Shi'a leader from Iraq (al-Sadr?) with the support of Iran, or 3) an Israeli leader, finally defeats or destroys someone identified as "Alus" or "bloody Alus" with their "last hand" (meaning a final last-ditch effort). One can well imagine the "last hand" of Israel being the infamous Samson Option. Then again, it could be part of America's "last gasp" in the Middle East according to several other European prophets. The Seer of Waldviertel, Alois Irlmaier, Erna Stieglitz, and others predict that the US will be defeated in Saudi Arabia and the oil fields of the Persian Gulf: but perhaps not before the destruction of Alus sanguinaire by the "last hand" of the US military.

If this is now or soon, then "Alus" is very likely to be President Bashar al-Assad of Syria.

Nostradamus, Quatrain 8.70 ~

He will enter villainous, unpleasant, infamous tyrannising over Mesopotamia, All friends made by the adulterous woman, the land horrible, black of feature.

If the general or leader who defeats Alus/Assad is American, according to the same quatrain, he will be inadequately supported by US naval forces (and air forces based on aircraft carriers). Perhaps this will be due to naval attacks by Iranian and even Russian subs. In another quatrain, Nostradamus says a "great fleet will flounder in the Arabian Gulf." This "great fleet" may be America's. The fighting inside Iraq and against Syria will be quite bad since Iraq is described in Quatrain 8.70 as a "land horrible and black of feature." Without sea or air support, US ground forces in Iraq, Iran, and the oil fields of Saudi Arabia and the Persian Gulf, are finally overwhelmed. Then "the black and angry one" (Iraqi Shi'a leader Muqtada al-Sadr or Iranian spiritual leader Ali Khamenei and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad) moves in and defeats and humbles the US, taking over Iraq, annexing it into a "greater Persia."

However, if this is a much later conflict, possibly post-World War III or early World War IV, the bloody monster who is killed in a final battle in Syria when war is in "the Byzantine Empire" (Turkey and other Balkans nations) may well be the one Islamic prophecy calls The Sufyani. It is literally the "last battle" or "last hand" of the war.

Potential candidates for this prophesied Western-backed usurper are Bashar's uncle, Rifaat al-Assad, Abdul Halim Khaddam, or an as-of-yet unknown Egyptian militant leader who will become the beneficiary of a reignited revolution in Egypt.

Sufyani Comes to Power in Syria

Daniel 11:21-23 ~

And in his estate shall stand up a vile person, to whom they
shall not give the honour of the kingdom: but he shall come
in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries. And with the arms of a flood shall they be overflown from before him, and shall be broken; yea, also the prince of the covenant. And after the league made with him he shall work deceitfully: for he shall come up, and shall
become strong with a small people.

Origen of Alexandria (approx. 185 to 254 AD) ~

When the close of the times draws nigh, a king shall arise out of Syria, born from an evil spirit, the overthrower and destroyer of the human race, who shall destroy that which is left by the former evil, together with himself ... But that king will not only disgrace himself, but will also be a prophet of lies; and he will constitute and call himself God; and power will be given him to do signs and wonders ...

NEW PREDICTION: 11/17/11 -- Events are beginning to overtake this prediction set for June 2012. My last and only other attempt to date this event, for June 2010, proved to be a bit premature. Ivan M. and myself have been warning since April 2007 that Bashar al-Assad's uncle, Rifaat al-Assad, now 73, would soon overthrow his nephew and become the leader of a new Arab superstate, an empire, with its capital in Damascus. The elder Assad has been plotting the take-over of Syria for many years and will set out to do what Nasser failed to do ... through the most ruthless and horrific means imaginable. It has taken the Arab Spring revolts to finally bring about the conditions for this occur ... now it appears they have. Assad has announced publicly his intention to overthrow the Bashar al-Assad government and bring about peace to the Arab world.

To his followers he is a lifelong proponent for uniting Syria and Egypt into one state and is a staunch advocate of the Socialist Arab Baath Party. His vision, like Gamal Abdel Nasser's, is that of a unified Arab world as a single Arab nation. Assad has close ties with the PLO and the Saudi royal family. He also seeks to guarantee a lasting peace between Israel and all the Arab nations. Dr Rifaat al-Assad has received numerous achievement awards from the UK, France, the US, and other Western nations.

Yet this is a man who is believed to be responsible for the genocidal killings of up to 30,000 Syrians in 1982 in a two-day campaign that leveled the city of Hama. His bloody hands makes him one of the most hated and feared men in the Arab world. Indeed, it makes him an even better candidate than Bashar al-Assad to be the one Nostradamus calls "the bloody Alus."

Both Western and Eastern prophecy warn that the man who takes Damascus by force and leads a great Arab federation (league, coalition, union, empire, etc) will be a ruthless dictator the likes of which the world has never seen. Supported by the West, and a great friend to Israel, he will be seen by many as a peacemaker, but shall prove himself to be a bloodthirsty tyrant. To Islamic prophecy he will be the ultimate Arab dictator known as the Sufyani; but in certain Christian biblical prophecy circles it is believed he may be none other than the beast of Revelation.

Evidence of the latter is quite compelling, although I am not entirely convinced. Those who subscribe to a Syrian beast theory believe much of the Tribulation and the persecution of Christians will take place largely in the Middle East region, whereas I tend to view the beast as a world leader in control of most of the Western world and the afflictions he brings about as being worldwide.

The "Syrian beast" view holds that the prophecy concerning the beast of Revelation concerned "the world" that mattered most to St John: Israel and the surrounding regions, what we loosely call the Middle East and North Africa. Thus, it will be the Israelis, Turks, Kurds, and the Arabs ... and the Christians living in those regions and those luckless enough to be captured in war ... who will be forced to take the mark of the beast or else be beheaded. Beheading was once the most common form of execution in the Arab countries and remains so in Saudi Arabia. Add to that other items, such as the fact that the name Assad (which means "lion") was changed in the 1920s from the original family name of Wahash (which means "wild beast").

Nevertheless, if Rifaat al-Assad is not the beast he may be his forerunner. The Arab Sufyani, I believe, is a type or archetype of the biblical antichrist or beast. Muslims have given the name of Dajjal to what many might consider to be the actual biblical beast. This person will be an European Jew and will work miracles just like the false prophet. The difference is that the Dajjal reigns over the entire planet after the death of the beast-like Sufyani, whereas the false prophet and beast reign together at the same time. I would point out that this Dajjal seems to be more a fusion of the biblical false prophet and the beast ... a false prophet because he works miracles and magic, a beast because he is one-eyed and wooly-haired.

Nostradamus, Quatrain 1.64 ~

At night they will think they have seen the sun when the half-pig man they see: Noise, cries, battle, war in Heaven seen: And one will hear the brute beasts speak.

Mohamed Morsi speaks at rally in Cairo

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsy, after crafting a peace between Israel and Gaza, returned to his native land and declared himself a dictator. He is likely the personification of "the half-pig man" Nostradamus warns us about. He may not directly cause World War III, but global war will be attendant upon his rise to power. US forces now deployed in northern Iraq, Nato member Turkey, and in the Mediterranean waters off the coast of Syria are prepared, in the event of Nato action, to go to war with President Bashar al-Assad ("the bloody Alus") with the possible aid of Israel. Some sort of nerve gas has already been released. It was seemingly timed to occur during the changeover from the old Mayan calendar to the current one around 22 December 2012.

I believe this "half-pig man," Mohamed Morsy, is the West's lastest, desperate effort to place a super-Arabist in power that will take his orders from Washington and Brussels. Efforts to place this person in Damascus have failed, yet it may well be that through Egypt their efforts shall succeed. Islamic prophecy states that a Western-backed Arab leader will arise from out of Egypt with 360 riders and overthrow the President of Syria. He will then rule in Damascus and merge Syria with Egypt, then proceed to unify a large portion of the Arab Middle East, creating a Western-backed and Israeli-backed Arab superpower capable of crushing Shi'a Iraqis, Iran and its military, and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan and everywhere the terrorist organisation seeks to take control, in Sudan, in Libya, in Saudi Arabia, and even as far way as the Balkans if needs be.

Morsy has publicly backed calls for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to be overthrown and face a war crimes trial. However, the untrustful, popular movement against Morsy is still very large and may yet overthrow him. If so, then the West and its puppet masters have once again miscalculated. Morsy's ceasefire between Israel and Gaza was a practise run for the false peace they hope to weave with Israel after the war.

What they do not know is that they are setting up the Islamic prophetic figure known as "the Sufyani" ... and a war he will wage they cannot hope to control. They hope to create a phony Armageddon and a phony messiah, but instead will unwittingly unleash a war that will rain down chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons upon billions of human beings.

Turkey Declares War on Syria

Turkish troops cross into Syria

NEW PREDICTION: 6/21/10 -- The decision seems late, but Turkey's declaration of war against Syria in October 2012 is actually well-timed. In a blitzkrieg-style attack, Syrian cities near the Turkish border find themselves under occupation.

The US air war against Iran had turned into a quagmire in the Persian Gulf waters where the conflict had become almost exclusively a naval one. The missile war against Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and other aligned nations had largely ended in the spring, allowing those countries to enjoy a lull in fighting. Only Kurdistan had remained a battlefield all year, with the US putting most of its effort on the high seas. Now, however, things once again are heating up as Iran and Iraq, with Russian military support, begin a much more fierce campaign against the other Middle East nations as their allies Syria and Lebanon pave the way for an Iranian-Iraqi endgame with Israel.

Turkish intervention will be one blow to the threat posed by Syria. However, Turkey is fighting a war on two other fronts with Iran and Iraq as well.

Orange And Red Revolutions Sweep
Asia, The Middle East, and
North Africa

Revolutions in Asia

NEW PREDICTION: 11/12/08 -- There is an alignment of nations from North Africa to East Asia that may seek to overthrow their repressive governments or dictatorships and bring about democratic change. There may be partial success, but I fear that overall these mostly peaceful demonstrations will be crushed by the leaderships or else lead to bloody insurrections and bloodier reprisals. These should run during the June/July 2010 period.

The nations most likely to be involved are: Libya, Egypt, Turkey, Georgia, Iran, Myanmar, Laos, and China.

The Land of Alus sanguinaire

Rallies in Daraa intensified after five civilians were reportedly killed on the first day of protests [Reuters]

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whom we can now call "the second butcher of Hama," has revealed himself as Nostradamus' "bloody Alus" or Alus sanguinaire as I have predicted on my site for many years now. The death toll as of September 17, 2012 stands at over 27,000 according to the Associated Press. His war, labeled by me long ago as "The War of Alus" is unquestionably in progress at this time. What was an extension of the Arab Spring demonstrations and peaceful revolutions has progressed from the worst state-sponsored slaughter of innocents since Saddam Hussein's 1991 purge of Iraqi Shi'a and Kurds and Rifaat al-Assad's orchestrated atrocity of Hama in 1982 into full-blown civil war.

"Bloody Alus": Bashar al-AssadSince June 2011, Assad has been periodically pushing his tanks, jets, and troops near the Turkish border, attacking towns, slaughtering 2,417 people thus far at last count, and driving tens of thousands more as refugees into Turkey.

Turkey has repeatedly warned Assad that it will go to war with Syria if the military assaults do not cease. In addition, Nato and the US have warned Assad he faces a possible war, with Nato member Turkey leading the charge.

Turkey has since allowed itself to be used as a base by the Free Syrian Army led by Colonel Riad al-Asaad (no relation to Bashar al-Assad). Iran has made threats of its own against Turkey, Nato, and the United States if major military action is taken.

Russia has stopped short of threats, but has condemned any US-Turkish military intervention in Syria. Even Iraq has threatened to get into the conflict and that, along with Turkish, Iranian, and US involvement, would be the final ingredient I have long ago warned would constitute "The War of Alus" ...and Israel need not even be involved (although I suspect over time it will get sucked in, one way or another).

We may now be on the eve of such a regional conflict. My base 7 system indicated this would not happen until October 2012, which is fast approaching, but it could end up being as late as July 2013.

This war would in time become linked with other conflicts and operations now in progress such as the Egyptian Sinai, Iraq, Pakistan, and Afghanistan; and those yet to take place, such as a new Arab-Israeli conflict and a US-led or Israeli-led war against Iran, a war that might possibly spread into Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

This would become the great Middle East war prophets such as Alois Irlmaier, the Seer of Krems, and Erna Stieglitz indicate will precede Moscow's military annexation of the former Warsaw Pact, Scandinavia, and the Balkans, followed by an Eastern/Russian blitzkrieg invasion of Germany, Austria, western Europe and World War III.

Blood on Assad's photo hammers home that he is Nostradamus' 'bloody Alus' of prophecy

The Syrian Revolution Becomes
The Syrian Civil War

Syrian Civil War

THE ROAD TO TEHERAN RUNS THROUGH DAMASCUS. While Israel and the US keep the world guessing if the long-anticipated air war against Iran will happen in October or as late as March/April 2013, preparations are being made for such a conflict by stirring the boiling pot in Syria, spilling some of the bloody broth onto three of its closest neighbours: Turkey, Lebanon, and Iraq.

There is a possibility a peace solution will be found and a new, powerful pan-Arabist leader installed. To the Muslims he may well be the long-awaited and long-dreaded Sufyani of Islamic prophecy. To the Christians he may well be considered the beast leader found in the Book of Revelation. This could happen as early as March 2013 or as late as February 2014.

However, if the current confrontation is still in progress by July 2013, I predict that it will become a full blown civil war like the Bosnian Conflict of 1992-1995 and the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939. Like Spain's civil war, I believe outside nations will become directly involved in the fighting, particularly Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and Lebanon. As for Israeli involvement, that only seems likely if there is direct provocation by Assad. Israel has no love for its former ally Turkey now, nor does it care very much for Iraq or Lebanon. Iran and Iraq, like Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy in the Spanish Civil War, may send troops into Syria to fight the Turks.

If, like Bosnia and Spain, this civil war lasts for three years, World War III may not actually begin until September 2016.

Otherwise, global war may begin in the Middle East at any time this year (2013) or, if not, by July 2013 as a huge regional conflict and quickly become something much, much worse and far reaching.

Israeli Air Force Fighter Jets Attack Civilian Targets in Syria
Syria says Israeli airstrike destroyed military facility
Syrian media say the attack outside Damascus killed two people. Western reports, however,
say the strike hit a convoy carrying arms for Hezbollah in Lebanon
By Edmund Sanders and Patrick J. McDonnell, Los Angeles Times

January 30, 2013, 6:25 p.m.

JERUSALEM — Israeli warplanes struck targets outside the Syrian capital, Damascus, on Wednesday, according to Syrian and Western reports, amid rising international fear that President Bashar Assad could lose control of his nation's stockpiles of chemical and advanced weapons.

A Western official who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed that the airstrike hit a truck convoy believed to be carrying antiaircraft weapons for Hezbollah militants in neighboring Lebanon. The shipment was thought to have included Russian SA-17 missiles, the official said. If such weapons were obtained by the Islamic militant group, it could weaken Israel's regional military power and hinder its ability to launch airstrikes in Lebanon.

Syrian state media, while also reporting an Israeli airstrike, denied that the target was a weapons shipment for Hezbollah, instead claiming that a military research facility and adjacent building had been destroyed. It said two people were killed and five were injured in the dawn attack. Syria did not say what kind of research took place at the facility in Jamraya, northwest of the capital.

Israeli officials declined to comment on the reports. But such a strike would mark Israel's most aggressive military action in Syria during the nearly two-year uprising against Assad's rule.

Israeli officials have been sounding alarms in recent days that Syria's weapons might fall into the hands of militant groups that could use them against Israel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu raised those concerns during a Cabinet meeting this week and officials have repeatedly said that any transfer of Syria's dangerous weapons outside the country might trigger a military response.

A Syrian military statement carried by the official Syrian Arab News Agency charged that the attack proved that Israel was behind efforts to oust Assad. "It has become clear to everyone that Israel is the motivator, beneficiary and sometimes executor of the terrorist acts which target Syria and its resistant people," it said.

Israel has tried to steer clear of the Syrian conflict, fearing any actions it might take, such as supporting opposition forces or launching a military strike, could backfire or become a propaganda coup for Damascus.

Syrian officials have long charged that U.S. and "Zionist" forces are behind the rebellion against Assad. Each side in the Syrian conflict has portrayed itself as an implacable enemy of Israel.

There are also fears that an Israeli strike could draw others into the Syrian conflict. Iran, Syria's close ally, said this week that any foreign attack against Syria would be regarded as an attack on Iran.

In addition to chemical weapons, Israeli officials have been particularly worried about Syria's stockpile of SA-17 antiaircraft missiles. "The initial speculation was about chemical weapons, but Israel is deeply concerned about Hezbollah acquiring this kind of advanced antiaircraft missile," said Jonathan Spyer, a senior research fellow at the Center for Global Research in International Affairs in Herzliya, Israel. "It would transform Hezbollah's game and potentially end Israel's air superiority over Lebanon. This is entirely about Hezbollah, not about Syria."

Officials in Lebanon denied knowledge of any Israeli attack, though they complained that Israeli jets had violated their airspace beginning Tuesday afternoon and through Wednesday morning. Though Israel routinely flies over Lebanon for reconnaissance missions on Hezbollah arms stocks and movements of weapons, the activity overnight was reportedly heavier than usual. Israel often refuses to confirm or deny its activities in the region, partly out of a belief its silence might reduce the pressure on its enemies to respond.

Israel is widely believed to have struck a Syrian nuclear facility in 2007. But it has never acknowledged the attack and Assad's regime, which was eager to avoid a direct confrontation with Israel, also dropped the sensitive matter.

In recent weeks, Israelis warned that Assad is losing control over his chemical weapons and military action might be taken. "If we have solid evidence, shared by our own partners all over the world, that chemical warheads are being transferred from Syria to Lebanon to Hezbollah, no one will condemn Israel for trying to prevent it," said retired Brig. Gen. Amnon Sofrin, a defense contractor and former senior intelligence officer.

Amid the renewed warnings, Israelis living in the northern part of the country near the borders with Syria and Lebanon have been swarming into post offices and other distribution centers to pick up government-issued gas masks. Israel relocated two of its five Iron Dome missile-interception systems to the northern part of the country, though military officials said the move was not related to fears of impending attacks.

Clashes Between Israel and Syria in the Golan Heights

IDF reports 'direct hit' on Syria target, after errant shell lands in Israel

IDF opens fire in response; this is the second time in two days, and sixth time in just over a week, that the infighting from Syria has spilled into Israel; IDF fired a 'warning shot' at Syria on Sunday for the first time since the Yom Kippur War.

Haaretz | Nov.12, 2012 | 2:13 PM

An errant mortar shell fired from Syria landed near an Israeli town in the Golan Heights on Monday, for the second time in two days. This was the sixth time in just over a week that the infighting from Syria has spilled into Israel. Israel Defense Forces tanks fired at two Syrian mortar shell positions in response to the fire, scoring a direct hit. Israel lodged a complaint with the United Nations immediately following the incident.

Sporadic mortar fire on Syrian side of the border hits post in eastern Golan;

For first time since the Yom Kippur War, the IDF has fired into Syrian territory: The IDF's Artillery Corps fired a missile at a post in Syria after a 120mm mortar shell landed in the eastern Golan Heights on Sunday morning. This was the first time that the army has fired at Syria since 1973. No injuries or damage were reported.

The missile fired by the IDF was an advanced Tammuz missile, an electro-optic missile that is based on Spike long-range missile technology and is developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.

IDF sources said that it was likely that this too was the result of the ongoing clashes between the Syrian army and rebels forces, and that Israel was not intentionally targeted. A statement issued by the IDF's Spokesperson's Unit said that "IDF forces fired warning shots and relayed a message to the Syrian forces via the United Nations that warns against additional fire. Additional fire will prompt a quick response."

Israel launches missile at Syria in retaliation of mortar attack

IDF spokesman Brigadier-General Yoav Mordechai added that the army's decision to retaliate, which was authorized by Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen Benny Gantz, had taken into account the fact that during the last two months, eight such events were recorded, including mortar and light-artillery fire as well as Sunday's mortar hit. Mordechai added that "For the first time since the Yom Kippur War, fire was aimed at a Syrian post. We don’t know whether there are any casualties on the Syrian side. "We also notified the UN of the incident and repeated the warning given to Syria, that the IDF will not tolerate any fire on Israel. We will be monitoring the situation to see if the message was received," he said.

Mordechai chose not to comment on whether the forces had intended to miss their target. He did however say that "every piece of artillery that threatens Israel is a potential target," and added that the IDF has no desire to get involved in the conflict between Assad and his opposition, but solely to protect Israeli citizens from wandering shells.

Ynet's senior defense analyst, Ron Ben-Yishai said that the IDF's goal in firing at Syria was not to instigate war, but rather to signal to Syria that Israel will not ignore any fire at its territory. The IDF's response, he said, was meant to convey that any such future fire will meet direct hits in Syria. The IDF is not interested in giving Assad a reason to shift attention towards Israel, rallying the Arab world behind him.

Last week a mortar shell landed in Alonei Habashan, causing no harm. Last Monday, an IDF patrol suffered a hit by Syrian gunfire. The jeep was hit during a routine Golani patrol of the border. No injuries were reported. Last weekend, three Syrian tanks entered the demilitarized buffer zone in the central Golan Heights, leading the IDF to raise its alert level in the area. The Israeli army filed a complaint with UN forces enforcing the ceasefire in the Golan Heights. The last few months have seen several mortar shells landing inside Israeli territory, apparently unintentionally.
